The goal of a community land trust is to acquire property, and provide affordable housing for the community in which they are established. We do that by pooling, grants, donations, and private loans to buy residential buildings at market value and hold them in a trust for the long term benefit of the community.
The long term community benefit is secured through land lease agreements and democratic governance of the Land Trust as a non-profit. Think of it like a co-op for the entire City of Kingston. A co-op that you are entitled to membership in by virtue of being someone who lives, or works in the City of Kingston. Members vote on the election of board members, acquisitions, allocation of funds, and the initiation of community projects.
The community land trust model is flexible meaning that we can mold it to bring the largest benefit to the Kingston community. Whether we want to provide affordable high-quality rentals to the students and low income residents of the City, or open up new avenues to homeownership in the City the community land trust model has been proven to reduce the cost of housing in the areas they operate in.

The Trek for Teens Foundation is an entirely youth-led and volunteer-run charity that focuses on raising funds and awareness for youth experiencing homelessness in Canada. We strongly believe in youth helping youth, and therefore our team is primarily made up of post-secondary students and young professionals across multiple cities in Ontario and Quebec. We strive to ensure our team member's personal growth is aligned to their work at the charity, and that they are able to develop professionally through our organization.

Foundations: Then and Now
- Then: KIMRI was formed by a young black Muslim and an older white Christian. When their academic backgrounds and experience converged, they had many discussions around racism in Kingston. At this intersection of their lives, they concluded that a more expansive approach would be more effective in resolving long standing social problems, since existing initiatives tended to focus on particular groups and a holistic take would engage the whole community.
- Now: Kingston Institute for Multi-Racial Inclusion (KIMRI) is an incorporated non-profit social enterprise. Through substantive conversation, we address deep seated challenges related to equity, diversity, inclusion and Indigenization (EDII.) A dedicated board of directors collaborates with various laudable initiatives to create meaningful change.
At Tetra, volunteers design and build custom assistive devices that help people with physical disabilities overcome environmental barriers, increase independence, and improve quality of life.
Compassionate Communities Kingston was founded in 2017 to bring the global compassionate communities movement to Kingston. We are inspiring intergenerational compassion in our communities by providing older adults with knowledge, connection and support -- promoting vitality, purpose and a sense of wellbeing.
174 bed long term care home that services individuals between the ages of 18 years of age and older. There is a secure home area that caters to residents with dementia as well, there is a mixed population with a variety of ages. Arbour Heights offers many different programs such as intergenerational programs, music programs, physical activity, restorative programs, gardening, arts and creative classes, pet visits, religious programs and much more.
Ryandale provides a sober living space for homeless men. It does not discriminate against past drug use, mental illness or time spent in prison. Residents spend up to one year learning life skills, healing from trauma and/or addiction and overcoming the obstacles that led them to become homeless. With Ryandale’s help, people can reduce their risk of relapsing and improve their chances of staying housed.
Sexual Assault Centre Kingston is a not-for-profit organization providing free, confidential, non-judgemental support for all survivors, 12+, of recent and/or historic sexual violence in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington (KFL&A) since 1978.
Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for friendship, inclusion, and meaningful connection for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Through one-to-one friendships and inclusive programming, we help build confidence, leadership skills, and a stronger sense of belonging within our communities.
Diocese of Ontario Refugee Support (DOORS) is a ministry of the Anglican Diocese of Ontario, dedicated to settling refugees in the Kingston, Ontario area.
DRAGONS’ DEN producers are hitting the road for an audition tour, with more than 30 stops in Canadian cities. The search is on for a new crop of aspiring entrepreneurs for CBC’s hit TV show’s landmark 10th season. Entrepreneurs from across the country have another chance to face the Dragons in a bid to score some high-powered financial backing for their business ventures.
We are coming to Kingston and we are really hoping you might be able to connect us with some volunteers interested in helping out for this audition location! We are looking for a total of 3 volunteers.
We need the volunteers to be available (preferably full day):
Fri Feb 27 – Kingston, ON
10AM-5PM, Ambassador Hotel and Conference Centre 1550 Princess Street (Atrium)
Volunteer duties would include:
- Signing pitchers in
- Helping producers
- Putting up signs
- Directing pitchers
- Keeping the flow of auditions smooth

The Kingston Coalition for Active Transportation (KCAT) was established in April 2008 and has since worked to facilitate the increase of active transportation in Kingston. KCAT works with various stakeholders in the city to enhance opportunities and move forward policy that encourage active transportation.
