April is Sikh Heritage Month across Canada. It is a time to celebrate the many contributions that Sikh Canadians make to our community right here in Kingston.
This month was chosen because it includes Vaisakhi, one of the most important times in the Sikh calendar. It is a season of renewal and a time to celebrate the values of service, equality, and social justice.
Why it matters for volunteers
The Sikh concept of Seva (selfless service) is a perfect example of what volunteering is all about. Whether it is helping at a local food bank, supporting a neighborhood cleanup, or helping a neighbor in need, the spirit of giving back is what makes Eastern Ontario a better place for everyone.
Many of our local nonprofit organizations in ON are founded on these principles of helping others.
How you can get involved:
- Learn: Take a moment this month to learn more about Sikh history in ON.
- Connect: Look for local Vaisakhi celebrations or community events happening in Kingston.
- Serve: In the spirit of Seva, check our latest volunteer opportunities to find a role that lets you give back to your community.
Happy Sikh Heritage Month to everyone celebrating in Eastern Ontario!
